For DjVu Reader

Effective Date: June 29, 2026 · Last Updated: June 29, 2026

Who We Are

DjVu Reader is published by an independent iOS developer (referred to in this policy as "we", "our", or "us"). You can reach us by email at [email protected].

This Privacy Policy describes how the DjVu Reader application for iPhone and iPad (the "App") handles information.

Short version: we do not collect personal data about you, and your DjVu books are not uploaded to us. The App imports and renders documents locally on your device.

Information We Collect

We do not collect, store on our servers, sell, or share personal information from the App. In particular, we do not collect:

  • your name, email address, phone number, or contact details;
  • the contents of your .djvu or .djv files;
  • your document titles, page contents, thumbnails, or reading history on our servers;
  • your location;
  • analytics or usage statistics;
  • cookies, advertising identifiers, or tracking data;
  • account or registration data, because the App has no accounts.

Because we do not collect personal data through the App, we do not maintain a user database.

What Stays on Your Device

The App stores data locally so it can provide its library and reading features. This data is not sent to us.

  • Imported books. When you import a DjVu or DJV file, the App copies the selected file into the App's private local container so it can reopen it later.
  • Library metadata. The App stores local metadata such as document title, stored file name, page count, file size, import date, last opened page, last read date, and thumbnail file name.
  • Thumbnails. The App may save local thumbnail images generated from imported documents to make the library easier to browse.
  • Reading progress. The App stores the last page opened and whether a book is in progress or finished.
  • Settings. Preferences such as appearance, compact library rows, keep-screen-awake setting, and App Store review prompt counter are stored using the system UserDefaults store.
  • Free import counter. The App stores the number of books imported all time so it can enforce the free plan limit of 5 imported books.
  • Premium access cache. The App may cache whether Premium access is active so the interface can reflect your status between launches.
  • iCloud backup. If iCloud Backup is enabled on your device, the locally stored items above may be included in your personal iCloud backup. This is controlled by your device settings, not by us.

You can delete locally stored App data by deleting imported books inside the App where available, or by uninstalling the App from your device.

How DjVu Files Are Processed

When you import a .djvu or .djv file, the App requests access through the standard Apple document picker and copies the selected file into its private local container. The App then reads metadata, renders pages, generates thumbnails, and tracks progress on your device.

The App does not upload your books or any portion of their contents to our servers. The App does not require an account to read documents.

Third Parties

Apple (App Store and StoreKit)

Premium subscriptions and lifetime purchases are sold and managed by Apple through the App Store. Apple is the merchant of record. We do not see your payment details, Apple ID, billing address, or full name. Apple's own privacy policy applies to App Store purchases, subscription management, purchase restoration, and App Store review prompts.

DjVu.js

The App includes a bundled DjVu.js decoder used locally to render DjVu documents inside the App. This bundled decoder is used to process files on your device and is not a third-party network service.

No analytics or advertising SDKs

The App does not include analytics, crash reporting, advertising, attribution, or tracking SDKs.

Purchases and Premium

  • The free plan allows 5 imported books total.
  • Premium removes the import limit.
  • Premium may be offered as a monthly subscription or a lifetime purchase.
  • Purchases are billed and managed by Apple through the App Store.
  • You can restore purchases in the App and manage or cancel subscriptions through your Apple ID settings.
  • We do not store, see, or process your payment information.

Sharing and Exporting

If you share a document or any other item using standard iOS sharing features, the destination is selected by you. The App does not log or track what you share. Nothing is shared automatically with us.

Children

The App is not directed at children under 13 (or the equivalent minimum age in your jurisdiction). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided personal information through the App, please contact us; because we do not collect personal data, there is normally nothing for us to delete from our systems.

Your Rights

Depending on where you live, you may have privacy rights under laws such as the EU/UK General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA/CPRA), and similar laws. These rights can include access, correction, deletion, portability, and objection to processing.

Because we do not collect or hold personal data from the App, we have no personal data to provide, correct, delete, or transfer in response to such a request. You still control the App's local data:

  • delete imported books from the App where available;
  • delete all locally stored App data by uninstalling the App;
  • manage iCloud backups in your device settings;
  • cancel subscriptions through iOS Settings > Apple ID > Subscriptions;
  • contact us with privacy questions at [email protected].

California residents: we do not "sell" or "share" personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA/CPRA, and we have no categories of personal information to disclose because we do not collect any through the App.

Security

The App relies on security features built into iOS and iPadOS, including app sandboxing, document picker permissions, local file-system protections, and Apple's App Store purchase verification. No method of electronic storage can be guaranteed to be perfectly secure. However, because the App does not upload your book contents to our servers, document handling stays within your device and Apple's system services.

International Use

The App may be available through the Apple App Store in multiple countries. Because document processing happens on your device and we do not collect document contents or personal data through the App, we do not transfer your App data across borders on our side.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time, for example to reflect new App functionality or legal requirements. When we do, we will update the "Last Updated" date at the top. The basic commitment that the App does not upload your DjVu books to us will not change without clear notice.
