RailMaker

Draw a line. Get a railway. Sketch a loop with your finger or Apple Pencil and RailMaker lays real wooden track along it, using only the pieces in your box. Then follow the numbered steps and build it on the floor.

Overview

Why RailMaker?

Wooden train sets come with a few pieces and no ideas. Every family with an IKEA LILLABO or BRIO box knows the moment: the pieces are on the rug, the loop does not close, and the last curve is pointing the wrong way.

RailMaker works with the pieces you actually own. Add your sets, draw the shape you want, and the app lays a track that closes on screen and closes on the floor. Cross your line and the road gets a bridge. Touch it with a second stroke and it gets a branch.

Piece sizes were measured from the makers' own 3D models and photos, so a plan is always buildable. It works with IKEA LILLABO and the BRIO-compatible family: BRIO, Hape, Bigjigs, Lidl Playtive, and other classic wooden track.

Features

From Sketch to Floor

Your Box

Add the sets you own with a tap: LILLABO 20, 10, 5, 45 and 50-piece sets, BRIO 33028, 33401, 33402, 33307 and 33772, Hape Figure 8 and E3700, Playtive track and switch sets. Or count loose pieces by hand. Keep one box per place you build in, each with its own floor size.

Draw It

One stroke becomes a closed loop or an open route with sidings. A crossing becomes a bridge with two ramps. A second stroke that touches the road becomes a branch with two splitters. RailMaker tells you what your box can afford before it builds, and never shows a crossing without a bridge.

Or Let RailMaker Invent One

Tap Create and get a spread of layouts, from the biggest circuit down to a simple oval, all from your pieces. Choose a closed loop, an open route from A to B, a toddler-friendly plan without switches, or require a ramp so every layout gets a real bridge.

Build by Hand

A track editor where every piece clicks onto the red dot, and nothing goes where it would not really fit. Close the loop with the fewest pieces, flip, undo, redo, snap to a grid, and mark missing pieces on a shopping list.

Then Assemble It

Every plan comes with numbered steps: which piece, how many to take from the bin, where it goes. A dark, full-screen build mode for the floor shows one step at a time. Simplify gives rounder corners and fewer pieces from the same drawing.

Gallery

30 ready-made layouts for both track families: figure eights, viaducts, double-track loops, switchyards, terminals. Each one is matched against your box. Your saved railways live here too, with their steps.

Share and Reuse

Share the build steps as text, export a layout as a file, and open a layout file a friend sent you. Turn a built track back into a drawing and simplify it again.

Offline and Private

No account, no ads, no tracking, no network requests. Your box, drawings, and saved plans stay on your device. Available in English, German, French, Spanish, and Polish.

Under the Hood

Built With

Swift SwiftUI SwiftData StoreKit 2 Apple Pencil Geometry Engine Beam Search

A Foundation-only geometry engine reads the drawing, decides which self-contacts are touches and which are crossings, and lays track through four stages: branch layouts, guided tracers along the ink, topology composers, and a random walker as the last resort. The same drawing always gives the same road.

The engine compiles on its own outside the app, so command-line harnesses, a route corpus, and a sketch fuzzer check every change against a library of real drawings copied off the phone.
